Hi!!! I’m back as promised! This will be the first installment of a series I’m starting called Pittsburg Adventures. Pittsburg adventures? Let me explain!
When I first started the college application process, I was pretty dead set on Columbia. My naive self thought I would get in and came up with a plan to explore NYC on the weekends. Obviously, I’m not in NYC, but Pittsburgh isn’t lacking in history, fun or food! Even better, CMU students get FREE access to pretty much every museum and bus! With that said, Let’s go!
Stop 1: Carnegie Museum or Art and Natural History
For my first adventure, I thought I’d start close. Luckily for me, the natural history museum is only a block away!
Admittedly, it’s not the biggest museum, but I’m a sucker for pretty much any natural history museum. Here were my favorites:
Hall of Sculptures miniatures- Every museum has a collection of Greco- Roman sculptures, but this is the first to have miniatures. As someone obsessed with small things, this was AMAZING!!!! The picture above is actually a miniature of a Royal Crown Derby tea set we are collecting at home!
Evolution of Chairs- Pittsburg has a history of design and this museum was not humble in showing that off. There were TWO galleries dedicated to showing off design through the ages, but the “evolution of chairs” display was by far my favorite and the most unique. To be honest though, there seems to be a big trade off between aesthetics and comfort. I’d also highly recommend checking the AMAZING glasswork.
Paleolab- I have a soft spot for fossils and the dinosaur collection was quite impressive and thorough. However, the coolest part was the Paleolab- a display of HOW scientists create the displays
Strictly speaking, this isn’t part of the museum, but how often do you see a full motorcade driving down the street!
Stop 2: Craig Street Crawl
After a bit of R&R, time for the second event of the day- Craig Street Crawl! Basically, every year, the businesses on Craig street (about a block from school) welcome CMU students with music and free stuff!
To be honest, I was a bit underwhelmed at the offerings. I actually spent most of the time waiting in line and missed face painting, but I had the best time hanging out with my new friends… and got a free plant!
Totally worth it!
All in all, my first adventure was a HUGE success. I’ll be back soon with the second installment (and a little surprise)! I FINALLY get to start classes tomorrow! Until then, Bye!
Wow! So much fun! My baby start her new life, soundly and happily
