About this blog

Hi, This is my first post so I’m going to talk about this blog. This blog will basically be a documentation of my cooking. I’ll write about what I cook and my experiments. There will be a mix of Chinese and western recipes as well as posts dedicated to healthy eating, my experimenting and restaurant recommendations.

My Recipes

I am a novice cook so most of my recipes are not original, that said, I will try my best to come up with originals. Also, I’ll work on actually following the recipes intstead of relying on substitutions. In the past, I have whipped cream and merengue with chopsticks and piped macaroons with a ziplock bag. Once I even tried (and failed) to make my own butter out of skim-milk and salt. Luckily, now that I live in Shanghai and the supermarket is a 2 minute walk from my house.

Most of the Chinese recipe are family recipes and extremely traditional. My family loves to cook and makes great food so I have a lot to learn. The caveat on that is that the Chinese do everything by taste so all the amounts are just approximations. For people used to strict recipes, this may be quite a shock but it’ll be something fun to try. I personally find the flexibility very appealing.

If you happen to try any of the recipes, have tips, tricks, questions or would like me to post something on this blog, feel free to email me at: theredtwinkie@gmail.com. Also, don’t forget to comment. I can always use them to improve this blog and my cooking. Enjoy!!!
