Eat Unique! Testing the Impossible Burger

Hi!! I’m back with this week’s adventure. I’ll admit, there’s not much of an adventure this week. I was going to check out the National Aviary, but my friend got sick 😦 Don’t worry, I’ll get there next week!

While I didn’t go on an actual adventure, I did go on a food adventure. Let’s Eat Unique!

Eat Unique

Eat Unique is a little cafe on Craig Street that serves the usual mix of sandwiches, salads, burgers and drinks. While the menu itself isn’t exactly “unique”, They have a reputation of uniquely delicious spins on the classic cafe fare. While the eclectic selection of sandwiches was tempting (hello Great Rinaldi!), I had another mission- try the Impossible Burger. Veganism is the new Keto these days and Impossible Burger is on the forefront of the trend. I know I’m at least 6 months behind trend, but that’s pretty punctual on “CMU time”. When in Rome, do as the Romans do right?

Food

Obviously, ordering 1 item hardly qualifies as a “restaurant review”. Luckily, another friend stepped in just in time. She’s a CS major, so please give her some love for taking the time to accompany me! Let’s eat!

Classic BLT- My friend decided not to eat unique and stuck with a classic. I must say, we were a bit disappointed. To be clear, it wasn’t bad by any means, it was mediocre. The good: BACON!!!! Crisp and smoky with a delicate balance between salt and spice that enhanced the natural richness. There was also plenty of it. The not so good: The bread was downright greasy. To be fair, it’s difficult to elevate a “classic BLT”

Impossible Burger- If the BLT was a slight disappointment, the impossible burger deserved to be disowned, at no fault of Eat Unique. Initially, I was impressed The “burger” had the look, smell, mouthfeel of a beef burger. The first bite even mimicked the fragrance, but it’s all sizzle and no steak. Each successive bite became exponentially more rubbery with a strange chemical aftertaste. Worst of all, I felt HUNGRIER after finishing. It’s as if my body didn’t recognize it as actual food and burned more energy trying to figure out what that crap was. Keep in mind, I go through 3-4 packets of sweetener a day! With that said, the housemade wheat bun was actually delicious- nutty and beautifully chewy

Service and Atmosphere

I LOVED both the service and atmosphere. Eat Unique has a trendy, casual vibe that really suits the college atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot for a quick dinner or afternoon coffee run. Speaking of quick, the food comes out at fast food speed, but with gourmet quality. The staff was also very polite, but it’s hard to judge service when all the interaction ended after ordering.

Overall Impression

While our choices today were nothing to write home about, I’ll definitely be going back to try some of their more “unique” items.

Well that’s it for this “adventure”. I promise to be back with a report of all the exotic birds next week! Until then, Bye!
