Time for the third installment of my Pittsburgh Adventures! As promised, I went to the National Aviary and on a scale of 1-10, it’s at least a 12. This adventure is extra special since it’s my first time on Pittsburg Public Transport. I’ve ranted about my dislike of busses, but guess what, I actually ENJOYED riding the 61. The only downside was that the busses also run on CMU time.
Oh yeah, Check out the weather!
Enough of the fluff, let’s get going!
National Aviary
The National Aviary is largest Aviary in the US (hence National). It features over 600 birds representing 200 species from all corners of the globe. Aside from providing the maximum viewing pleasure, the Aviary is heavily invested in education and conservation with field trips, research support and ongoing projects. Really love birds? They’ll host private tours and special events! To the birds!
Before entering the main exhibit halls, I met these silly fellows:
One of them was particularly hungry and after failing to crack a nut with its beak, just swallowed it whole!
Next up, a majestic Bald Eagle…..
Think the “aviary” is just a glorified zoo? Wrong! The main exhibits are anything but dull
The open exhibits meant I was literally walking around with birds flitting around overhead!
Not interactive enough? The Aviary offers a host of exclusive Animal Encounters from private penguin feedings to playing with crane chicks. Unfortunately, those come at a pretty hefty price. But, don’t despair! Everyday there are interactive feeding sessions that only cost between $3-$5! Even better, these sessions are actually open for walk- ins (the feed is charged). I made it just in time for the Lorikeet feeding:
Let me say, those guys are AGGRESSIVE. Four others landed on me even though I didn’t even have food. One landed on my chest and actually starting biting my lip!
I hope everyone enjoyed this high flying adventure and gets to try something new in the wonderful week ahead! Until next time, Bye!
What an adventure! I wanted to vist there next time I am going CMU!
