Restaurant Review: Union Grill

Hi!!! Sorry for the late post. I just spent the most magical weekend with my mom. Honestly, I’m probably the luckiest girl on campus. First, my dad flies over to see me, and only a week later my mom flies over! We spent the weekend shopping, visiting museums, and of course, went for an AMAZING meal! Even better, my good friend agreed to come!

Union Grill

The Union Grill is a classic American bistro bar right on Craig Street. In the era of chains, I couldn’t wait to try this quaint spot practically on campus. They serve up classics like burgers and pot roast as well as their famous for their “turkey Devonshire”. Of course, there’s always local craft beers to enjoy. However, there’s something that caught all of our eyes- Salmon Specials. We weren’t the only ones excited to dine. There was quite a crowd. Luckily, it was only a 20min wait. Let’s eat!

Food

– not my pic, but this is the idea.

Salmon Dinner- I ordered the Salmon dinner- a HUGE 8oz chargrilled salmon fillet with 1 sauce and and two sides. I chose pico de Gallo and 2 salads- nothing too special there. I’ll get back to the pico. While the meal seems quite boring, my tastebuds would beg to differ. The salmon was fresh beyond belief. More importantly, the seasoning lit up every pleasure center and despite being cooked through, was tender beyond belief with the perfect crusty char! The pico added a splash of spicy acidity that cut through the natural acidity of the salmon.

Salmon on Ceasar Salad- My friend also ordered salmon, on a salad. As with my salmon, it was seasoned and cooked to perfection (although my char was better 😉 ) The salad was nothing special, but well, not over, dressed.

Salmon Taco- They call this a taco, but it’s really an oversized (I mean OVERSIZED) burrito. Seriously, an 8oz filet on a 12in tortilla piled high with beans and guacamole. As expected, the salmon was perfect. Most impressively, despite the richness of the salmon and avocado, the dish was far from overly rich. Case in point, my mom almost finished the entire thing! This is definitely an indulgence worth splurging in

Note: For the quality and size of the dishes, the price was more than reasonable. Worth every penny!

Service and Atmosphere

Union Grill’s atmosphere is the combination of a old fashioned sports bar and an elegant yet lively classic bistro. The wooden decour and dim low hanging lights give it an old fashioned feel that oozed cozy comfort. Despite the appeal to age, it was far from geriatric. This is the perfect restaurant for date nights or happy hour, although the small space means it’s probably not great for larger gatherings or formal meetings.

Service was also great to say the least. The wait staff were extremely obliging and attentive despite the number of customers. More impressively, the food arrived very quickly- less than 15 minutes!

That wraps up one of the best weekends EVER! Mom left and I miss her already I hope everyone has a great week. Until next time, Bye!

  1. What an experience for this family weekend! I witnessed that my baby became a confident, polite and driven young adult! She was managing to spare her time spending with me, shopping, visiting museum and gardens, and show me around the campus, so well prepared and planned!

I loved my food in this restaurant, actually back in home we are so missing you who can help navigate and find good food.

I am so waiting for my foodie to be back to home during winter break!
